Guide / Free European Train WiFi

FREE WIFI ON EUROPEAN TRAINS

Free onboard WiFi is the European rail standard. Eurostar, ICE, TGV, Frecciarossa, AVE, LNER, Avanti, ÖBB Railjet, NS, SBB — every major operator includes it. This page goes country by country with the gotchas (Ouigo doesn't, Italo's tier system, DB's login flow).

The pattern

Every flagship European long-distance operator includes free WiFi. The exceptions are budget operators (Ouigo, Avlo, Lumo on most routes) and short-haul commuter services where speeds wouldn't be useful anyway.

First-class passengers usually get a higher tier — uncapped data, streaming allowed. Standard class is metered or speed-limited, but generally enough for messaging, browsing, and Spotify.

Country-specific tips

🇫🇷 France: TGV INOUI free WiFi works through tunnels via trackside fibre. Ouigo (the budget brand on the same trains) does not include WiFi.

🇩🇪 Germany: WiFiOnICE on ICE/IC is free but requires a click-through login on the WiFiOnICE captive portal. First-class gets uncapped data.

🇮🇹 Italy: Frecciarossa Premium/Business/Executive get a higher streaming tier. Italo offers free WiFi to all and is testing Starlink Rail.

🇪🇸 Spain: Renfe AVE includes free PlayRenfe portal access (with entertainment + WiFi). Avlo (low-cost AVE) does not.

🇬🇧 UK: Free WiFi on every long-distance operator. Heathrow Express, Stansted Express, and Gatwick Express also free. Lumo (low-cost London–Edinburgh) is one exception that charges.

🇪🇺 Cross-border: Eurostar free across the Channel Tunnel. Thalys (now folded into Eurostar) free. TGV-Lyria (Paris–Switzerland) free.
