## How to read a tail number

The first character or characters show the country of registration. A United States
aircraft always starts with N. That is why
United States tail numbers are called N-numbers.

An N-number uses one of three formats:

- N12345 — one to five digits

- N1234Z — one to four digits, then one letter

- N123AB — one to three digits, then two letters

The digits never start with zero. The letters never include
I or O,
because they are too easy to confuse with 1 and 0.

## Questions

What is an aircraft tail number?
+

A tail number is the registration mark painted on an aircraft. It identifies one specific airframe, the way a number plate identifies one car. No two aircraft in the world share the same registration. It stays with the airframe for its whole service life unless the operator or country of registration changes.

What is an N-number?
+

An N-number is the tail number of an aircraft registered in the United States. The FAA assigns it. It always starts with the letter N, then uses one of three formats: one to five digits (N12345), one to four digits and one letter (N1234Z), or one to three digits and two letters (N123AB). The digits never start with zero. The letters never include I or O, because they look like 1 and 0.

Where do I find the tail number of my flight?
+

Look on the rear fuselage or the tail fin as you board. It is also printed near the boarding door, and often on the safety card in the seat pocket. Many airline apps show the registration on the flight details screen after check-in.

Does the tail number tell me if my plane has WiFi?
+

Yes. WiFi hardware is fitted to individual airframes, not to a whole fleet at once. Two aircraft on the same route can have different WiFi. SeatWiFi tracks the reported WiFi provider for each tail number, so a lookup shows what is actually installed on that airframe.

Where does this registration data come from?
+

The FAA Releasable Aircraft Database for United States registrations, plus international fleet records and reports from passengers. WiFi provider data comes from passenger reports, airline announcements and speed tests submitted to SeatWiFi.

Why is my tail number not found?
+

This database covers commercial airline aircraft. It does not cover general aviation, private aircraft, military aircraft or cargo-only operators. If you looked up an airline aircraft that is missing, report it and we will add it.
